The importance of hygienic washrooms - Developments and Design

The importance of hygienic washrooms

It’s common knowledge that toilets harbour thousands of microscopic bacteria that can be harmful to your health and the importance of hygienic washrooms should never be underrated.

There are numerous benefits to a hygienically clean washroom, namely, it will stop the spread of harmful germs and bacteria to other areas of the workplace, but a pleasant washroom environment will also boost staff and/or children’s morale and save the fabric of the building, in turn reducing ongoing running costs.

Making a good first, and lasting, impression is paramount in washrooms, whether that be to encourage repeat business in hotels and restaurants, or to ensure staff health and wellbeing in the workplace and schools.

The aesthetic look of washrooms within a business or school is important to relay the message that the rest of the establishment is clean and functioning to a high standard also and builds confidence. The right fittings, products and materials can be a dealbreaker in maintaining cleanliness and there are various options to choose in your design to combat and maintain strict hygiene standards.

Hand Dryers

The most popular solution to the old fashioned paper towels has evolved with technology to the sensor activated dryers.  The benefits of these compared to paper towels are that hand dryers require far less maintenance. New high-speed dryers eliminate both the stress of facing an empty paper towel dispenser and a washroom littered with used paper towels. It also helps with germs and possible infection and looks more modern and aesthetically pleasing.

Another bonus to this is that according to reports from Climate Conservancy, generally, hand dryers are the more ecological choice as they cause between 9 and 40 grams of carbon dioxide emissions per use compared to the average of 56 grams of carbon dioxide emissions for paper towels.

Wall Hung Toilets

Wall hung toilets are becoming an increasingly popular option for those looking to create contemporary style bathrooms and compared with their more conventional counterparts, wall hung toilets can offer a number of practical benefits in the importance of hygienic washrooms.

Wall hung toilets have a unique look, where the toilet is suspended above the floor with a concealed cistern in the wall. This enables easier cleaning with less opportunity for germs to gather in concealed places, improving hygiene standards throughout.

Flooring Options

Flooring materials must be able to handle large amounts of traffic in a safe and effective manner, while also being visually pleasing and stylistically in tune with the rest of the environment. It’s also important that floors be relatively easy to keep clean so that you can cut down on long-term maintenance costs. Safety, durability and of course, being water resistance are all factors to take into consideration. Bacteria can thrive in the grout lines so an option could be larger floor tiles with anti slip floor covering to ensure safety measures are met.

Sensor Taps

Sensor taps have become increasingly popular as the taps are not only more water efficient but also improve hygiene standards without the user having to touch them.  Maintenance is often lower as there is no accidental overflow issues and temperatures can be set to avoid any chance of scalding.

Above are just a few of the options outlined in designing and installing a commercial washroom, for further information and assistance in understanding the importance of hygienic washrooms please contact us here.
